The Challenge

The user is trying to view a website to help them buy a car. But, the content can’t load without the user’s location. They need to enter their ZIP code and first name.

Ask them where they live and who they are without sounding like you're unnecessarily mining their data.

My Solution

No one likes data mining. And the car buying industry is competitive. If our site’s invasiveness annoys the user, there’s a good chance they’ll quit the page in favour of a competitor. To keep them hooked, I’ve got to be upfront about what they get in return for their information. The message states this quid pro quo clearly (they’ll unlock discounts near them). It’s also positioned strategically, so the user can see available cars in the background as some additional bait.
