About this project
The UCT Online High School is an innovative online school that has radically rethought education in South Africa. It aims to provide access to affordable, high-quality education on a large scale, making opportunities that would never have existed otherwise.
As part of a large product team, I designed and developed Grade 9 English. This included the analysis and creation of the learning path, writing and developing lessons, creating videos and other learning materials, developing assessment tools, and restructuring past content. In total, I developed 25+ modules from scratch and iterated on 25 modules.
One of the biggest challenges was creating impactful content within the project restraints. Data is a barrier to entry for South African learners, so I had to be mindful of data cost. Moodle mostly uses HTML, which makes interactivity difficult. This project had tight deadlines, so I worked efficently and focused on creating an MVP that could be built upon in years to come.
Most challenging of all was getting to know the learner. How do you create evergreen content that will engage and matter when the ‘user’ can be anyone, across South Africa, in past or present? I drew on my teaching experience to create learner personas and to write with them in mind.
